Dexter Backu and Restore Tool It is essential for any mature program to have a backup and restore tool Dexter has been so equipped forever. This tool will create ASCII files (TXT extension, backup.TXT) for all of the selected areas you wish to backup. ![]() The above image illustrates how this form will appear when you first open it. I have added bullets to the above image so that I can easily explain the buttons and areas that appear on the form. (A) The 'Where?' box shows the path where Dexter will either place the backup you want to create, or where Dexter will located that data that you are trying to restore. This is a drop-down list that can be used to find other locations where you might want to place or get data. The locations that appear when you drop-down the list can be changed by using the form that will appear when you click on the Folder List button. (B) When this button is sunken, like it appears here, Dexter will place your backup into the folder as shown in the 'Where?' box, but inside of a folder within this folder that represents the data and time when the backup was done. (see, illustration below). (C) The 'Browser for Folder' button will bring up a dialog box where you can navigate through the various folders on your computer to locate another location where you might want to drop your backups, or restore your data. What you select using this dialog box will drop into the 'Where?' box. (D) The 'Folder List' button will bring up a small form where you can add different locations where you might want to drop backups. (E) The operation 'Export (send data to text files)' button should be selected when you want to do a backup of your data. (F) The operation 'Import (bring data from text files)' button should be selected when you want to do a restore of your data. (G) This area is where you select the specific data that you want to backup or restore. (H) The 'Select All' button will select everything in the 'Data Specifics' area. (J) The 'Deselect All' button will deselect everything in the 'Data Specifics' area. (K) The 'Do It' button will run the operation as you have specified through the choices you have made in the above areas. (M) The 'Backup/Restore Status' red box will keep track of the progress of your backup or restore operation. (N) If you need help regarding this form, you can click on this button to get context-sensitive help. ![]() The above illustration shows how Dexter will create a backup when the "Add Backup to...' button is sunken. The folder when Dexter dropped the new backup I just created is entitled: 01042009_1710 This translates to 01/04/2009 at 17:10 (military time 5:10 p.m.) ![]() The above image shows the 'Browse for Folder' dialog box that you can use to find a location where to backup, or data for a restore. Hope this helps! |
